Master Social Media Marketing!

The Social Media Marketing Workbook 2021 edition is your step-by-step guide to social media marketing. The book explains how social media marketing is like “throwing a party” vs. social media, which is like only “attending a party.” It deep dives into the concepts of eWOM (electronic word of mouth), the customer continuum, social (and viral) spread, and trust indicators. Whether you want to market on Facebook or Twitter, YouTube or Yelp, Pinterest or LinkedIn, the Social Media Marketing Workbook will help you master the art (and science) of social media marketing.

Why Market via Social Media?

If you’ve read this far, you’re definitely intrigued by social media as a marketing platform. Perhaps you’re just starting out with a Facebook Page for your business, or perhaps you’ve seen your teenager spend hours on Instagram or YouTube, or you realize that the female, shopping demographic is “on” Pinterest. Or you’ve painfully learned that Yelp reviews can make (or break) your business. Social media, after all, is all around us in today’s 24/7 desktop, tablet, and mobile phone environment.

Maybe you have already attempted a Facebook Page, a YouTube Channel, or a Pinterest board, but it hasn’t really worked out. “How does social media really work,” you wonder. “What’s all the fuss about, and does it really work wonders to bring customers to your door and make sales?”

This book will explain the “how” – a step by step, systematic method to effective social media marketing. But before we dive in to the “how,” let’s step back for a minute and ask the “why.”

Why market on social media?

Here are some reasons why social media marketing is valuable:

  • Social media is big. Facebook, the largest social media platform, has over one billion users worldwide and climbing; LinkedIn with over 350 million members is “the” network for B2B marketers. Every minute 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube, and nearly everyone goes to Yelp or Google+ to check out reviews on local businesses.
  • Your customers are on social media. Nearly everyone uses Facebook – from teenagers to grandmas, business executives to flight attendants. Most professionals have at least a LinkedIn profile. Everyone reads reviews online, etc. Fish where the fish are: by participating in social media, you can reach your customers where they “hang out.”
  • Social media is free. Facebook, Yelp, Google+, YouTube, Pinterest… are, of course, free to use. Users love them because “for free” they get access to their friends and family, plus information on brands that they love. And in terms of marketing there is a lot you can do, for free, to build your brand, spread eWOM (electronic word of mouth), help you stay top-of-mind with your customers, and even “get shares” or “go viral.” (Free, as we will learn, does not mean easy or no hard work involved – more on that later!)
  • Social Media can reach not only existing but also new customers. Between organic and paid reach on sites like Facebook or Twitter, you can not only stay in touch with your existing customers, you can also be discovered by new customers. Unlike on search engines like Google (where customers must pro-actively look for you), on social media you can be discovered as customer No. 1 shares information with customer No 2.

Social media, however, is also complicatedUsing social media is one thing, and marketing on social media is another. Most businesses fail at social media marketing because they just don’t “get it.” They don’t understand how social media works, and they fail to see the incredible marketing opportunities beneath the surface of this huge but messy brave new world of marketing. Quite simply, you have to invest some time to learn “how” to market on social media

The Social Media Marketing Workbook is just that, a workbook full of great ideas, food for thought, and helpful links to information and items for further exploration. I read it once but will be going back through the book, most likely more than once. There is SO much terrific information in this book. This workbook demystifies the process of using social media to gain customers. I learned a ton about platforms that I thought I was really familiar with. The book also has helpful graphics and examples of advertising on the various platforms.
This book is worth substantially more than what I paid for it. I have never seen a clearinghouse of information like this that is related to online marketing. The book takes an in-depth look at marketing on all of the major social media sites, including LinkedIn, Facebook, and even Pinterest. The last couple of chapters deal with handling reviews, using SEO, and marketing via email. I particularly enjoyed the section on reviews, as the author covers not only asking for reviews but handling reviews that do not paint a picture of a company in the best light.
The email chapter gives terrific insight on how to get a company’s email read and how to develop an email marketing campaign. This book is also easy to read, it is written in a casual, informative style that really makes you feel like you are sitting with the author and having a conversation. I would recommend this book to business owners or anyone who is in charge of marketing for companies of any size.

I have been thinking about opening my own small business based around hand-bound books for a while and have been stumped on one specific part of running a business: marketing. What websites do I use to advertise? Do I buy advertising? How does Twitter work and should I have one? All of this and more were on my mind when I ran across The Social Media Marketing Workbook and I think I finally have answers to those questions and more. Before reading this book, I thought Facebook was something I could ignore during social media marketing since it’s a little old school, but now I realize it can be really useful if I’m looking to connect my business to a specific crowd and age of people. Similarly there is so much information on LinkedIn and how to use it compared with other sites for marketing my business. I think the best thing about this book is its setup. Each chapter is like a week-long lesson in a classroom with in-depth information and assignments to complete to take you along a path that leads to a fully fledged marketing plan. Not only do I have a ton of knowledge on marketing online now, I also have a pretty substantial marketing plan laid out as well. I vaguely mentioned this already, but this book comes with a lot of online resources and worksheets as well that can be accessed after purchasing the book. For me, that is what put this book over the edge for me into pure awesome. Having worksheets and other resources easily accessible online made the whole experience an A+.

I myself do not know much about using social media to market a business. This book covers step-by-step instructions on how to set up a page, contents, tying different social media accounts together, search engine optimization, keywords, how to find your reviews, etc. The nice thing about the book is that many of the steps, is that in most all of them the steps are relatively the same, just a slightly different platform.

Now I put a simple step to the test. I have been an Avon Rep for years, I have a website but I haven’t done much with it until recently. So I decided to create a post that was engaging, asking them to also look at my website to just few the products and asking them to like and share my Facebook post. Then I went to my Instagram page and did the same thing only I tied my Instagram page to my Facebook page. It worked. So now when I post on Instagram it also posts it to my Facebook page.

The book explains how to determine content and to make it more engaging that out right asking them to purchase your product or services. It also explains the differences between the major social media platforms. YouTube is a little different in that it mainly is about posting videos, Pinterest the smaller of the group is geared more to women and DIY. Now Facebook and Instagram can do all of those things and more, as were LinkedIn is more about setting up your business profile to network with other businesses and/or finding applicants to fill jobs.

All-in-all it is a great book for beginners or technology challenged people who want to use it to promote there business. I will say that, I did not read anywhere in the book on how to make money using these social media platforms, other than the obvious use of keeping your business in front of your family, friends, current and/or potentially new customers. The book is packed with information and instructions, a good social media book.

This is a truly awesome book on Social Media Marketing. We used it for my graduate level class at Purdue. I did not realize all the effort and planning that goes into designing an effective marketing campaign on the various social media platforms. It was a real eyeopener for me. The author updates the book just about every year, so you have the most recent information at your finger tips. He also provides a number of video supplements for the book that you get for free. I really cannot recommend this book enough. It is awesome.
