These days, it seems like everyone wants their ads to show up on Google’s search results pages. This book goes through the whole process, step by step.

First of all, when starting the process of setting up your ads, you will be encouraged to advertise on Google’s Search Network and Display Network. Stay away from the Display Network; they are two very different things. The Search Network ads will show up on Google’s search results pages. Display Network ads will appear on YouTube, Gmail and on questionable sites whose only reason for being is to get clicks.

You, the business owner, pay Google every time someone clicks on one of your ads (that is how they make their money). You are interested in high quality clicks, that turn into a sale from your website. Keywords are very important. Be as specific as you can about the kind of customer you are seeking. Come up with, say, half a dozen “perfect” keywords, and set up a separate ad campaign for each. There are ways to measure, and analyze, just how well each keyword is doing. Don’t be afraid to change, or delete, any ad campaign that is not working. Keeping it is only costing you money.

Along with positive keywords, there are negative keywords, like “cheap” or “free”, that you will not pay for. Every so often, get online and make sure that your ads are running (don’t just take Google’s word for it). It is also possible to make sure that your ads will appear within the first four or five results on the results page. People who are searching using their smartphone will not go through pages and pages of results.

This book is not exactly a page-turner, but it is very much worth reading. The author does a very good job at making the whole process as painless as possible, helped by lots of screenshots. Any business, small or large, that wants to advertise online would do very well to start right here.

“Google Ads Workbook: Advertising on Google Ads, YouTube, & the Display Network,” by Jason McDonald shares practical, engaging, and hands-on techniques, primarily, for business owners, marketing managers, and nonprofits. This workbook provides tips and tactics about using Google Ads efficiently “to make more money, sell more stuff, and do it as cheaply as possible.” Videos, infographics, and links are included along the way which makes this guide even more helpful. In the first chapter, I chuckled at the comparison scenario of Google to an auctioneer. This is just one example of how the author breaks this complex topic into understandable and relatable material, especially for readers who are not marketing and technologically savvy. Vocabulary is specifically defined so readers have a clear understanding of the information being presented. The section on “Google Ads Gotchas” was very eye-opening and helped me understand the misleading elements that advertisers can unintentionally waste money on, such as inputting negative keywords or converting between devices. It is importance to understand that key words and target demographics play a huge role in digital advertising. In Chapter 8, readers learn how to maximize their Return on Investment. Jason McDonald’s abundance of knowledge around the Google platform makes this step-by-step resource creditable and invaluable for any entrepreneur. With technology taking over our lives and companies vying for our attention, this workbook is loaded with valuable tools and tips to help navigate the digital world of advertising.

Google Ads (Adwords) Workbook by Jason McDonald is a step by step “how to book” for those looking to advertise on Google. No matter what level you are in an organization from owner to manager, this book will help you navigate through the tricky world of Google Ads. He presents his information in such a way that even if you are not up to speed in advertising on the internet like me, you can do this. He goes into detail with excellent examples of the 2 types of advertising, Search or Display, with real life scenarios of which engine you would need. McDonald also goes into detail of the “Gotchas”. Since Google Ads is a click-based moneymaker for Google, these are the money pits that can seriously reduce your profits. He’s very good about explaining each step you read along in such a way that it’s not tedious or filled with unfamiliar jargon. He also provides screenshots to help reinforce his points (excellent teaching tools). The 2 most important sections to me are the Return On Investments (ROI) and the Gotchas. These two sections have very valuable information for anyone looking to advertise on Google. It’s obvious this man has the knowledge and practical experience to give advice on this subject. Even if you aren’t in the market to advertise on Google, you will learn a lot. For example, I was reading other reviews on this book and a dog food ad pops up in the margin. Before I read this book, I would think “why is a dog food ad popping up in an area about a book about Google?” Now I know why. It’s a good read – I highly recommend giving it try and keeping the knowledge that you’ll obtain.

Before I purchased The Google Ads (AdWords) Workbook, I had a very limited, and quite incorrect, understanding of how Google search queries worked. I have had some experience with helping clients try to make their websites and products stand out in search engines, but I had done it without fully understanding Google’s methods behind the scenes.

This book provides you with an understanding of the different types of networks that Google uses, specifically the Search Network vs. the Display Network. When you, as the business owner, know what you are trying to offer and the clientele you want to reach, you will be able to better choose the network you want to primarily interface with. In addition, learning the pros and cons of the various keywords you might want to implement helps you target your audience more effectively. In addition, the author also points out that there can be negative keywords, such as “free” or “cheap” that you may want to stay away from. Of course, there can also be ambiguous keywords that can create frustration at times.

One especially helpful section of the book focused on how I, as a business owner, need to recognize the differences between my goals for customer purchases in the Search Network, vs. Google’s goals of customer clicks. The author also includes helpful tips for how improving your ads can save you money in the long run.

While my clients mostly interact with the Search Network, this book also provides great detail regarding the Display Network, and how to best sell yourself there. It seemed especially helpful to read Google’s approach, vs. Amazon’s approach, to selling items online. Additionally, there is even a section on advertising within YouTube.

I would say that the only downfall I found in this book was that I sometimes got confused by the sentence structure or grammar, most often at the beginning. However, the easy readability of the text made the book interesting and relatable to read.

Oh, and by the way, the author includes tons of great links to information on his website. Not only were there interesting anecdotes, there were graphs and charts, links to tables, videos backing up the author’s claims, insight into Google’s methods and philosophies, and additional resources available just by following the links.

I have looked long and hard to find a perfect book to teach me about google adwords and marketing online.
I tried doing it all myself but I have found myself spending all that money and getting little to no results. Jason has written a book that is very educational but also give you insights on what is what and how to do it. It is loaded with knowledgeable information that helps me put my ads together and work on my do’s and don’ts.
With the book you also get great worksheets which help with planning and doing a better job on finding the right keywords and audience. Book is very well written…especially for somebody like me that has little to no knowledge on adwords and google, it “speaks my language”. If you are looking for a great book, full of useful info, this the book for you 🙂
